A chief executive is the only person in the organisation with no functional home, accountable for everything and expert in one thing, and the job is largely deciding what deserves their attention. This programme addresses that. Delegates work through the relationship with the board, including what the board is entitled to and where management judgement properly sits, and setting direction when the information is incomplete and the market is moving. Capital allocation is covered as the decision that most determines long term outcome. Building and holding an executive team follows, including replacing somebody who was loyal but is no longer right. External representation to investors, regulators, government and media is addressed. The course closes on succession, on the chief executive's own accountability, and on knowing when to leave.
