Risk Assessments, Method Statements and Quality Plans

Risk assessments and method statements are safety critical documents that are routinely written to satisfy a client rather than to control a hazard. This course addresses the difference. Delegates learn to carry out a task based risk assessment that identifies real hazards, to write a method statement a crew can actually follow, and to build an inspection and test plan that assures quality without duplicating effort. Substantial time is spent on the practical failures: generic documents copied between jobs, controls that assume behaviour nobody exhibits, and the point at which a job changes enough that the assessment must be redone.

Course objectives

  • Carry out a task based risk assessment that identifies real hazards
  • Select controls in the correct order of the hierarchy
  • Write a method statement a working crew can follow
  • Build an inspection and test plan that assures quality proportionately
  • Recognise when a change on site invalidates the assessment
  • Brief a crew so the document affects what actually happens
  • Review documents critically before they are issued
