NEC Engineering and Construction Contracts

The NEC form works differently from traditional contracts: it is written to be managed proactively, and a team that administers it reactively loses the benefit and often the entitlement. This course covers managing it as intended. Delegates work through the structure of core and main option clauses and what each option does to risk, the programme as a contractual document rather than a planning convenience, and early warning and the risk register. Compensation events are covered in depth, including notification, quotation and assessment. Payment and the different option mechanics follow. The course closes on the behaviours the contract assumes and what happens when they are absent.

Course objectives

  • Describe NEC structure and what each main option does to risk
  • Maintain the accepted programme as a contractual document
  • Operate early warning and the risk register
  • Notify, quote for and assess compensation events correctly
  • Apply the payment mechanics of the chosen option
  • Administer the contract proactively within its time limits
  • Recognise where absent collaborative behaviour creates exposure
