Maintenance Management

Maintenance Contracting and Outsourcing

Maintenance is outsourced to gain flexibility and specialist capability, and it frequently delivers neither because the contract pays for attendance rather than for equipment that runs. This course covers structuring it properly. Delegates work through the decision of what to outsource and what must stay in house, contract models from time and materials through fixed price to performance based arrangements, and the incentives each creates. Scope definition and the interface with the client's own team are covered. Performance measurement, availability guarantees and the data required to enforce them follow. Contractor competence, safety and site control are addressed. The course closes on transition, on knowledge retention and on bringing work back in house.

Course objectives

  • Decide what to outsource and what capability must stay in house
  • Compare contract models and the incentives each creates
  • Define scope and the interface with the in house team

  • Secure the data needed to hold a contractor to those measures
  • Manage contractor competence, safety and site control
  • Handle transition, knowledge retention and bringing work back in house
