Investigative Interviewing Skills

An interview conducted badly produces an account that cannot be relied on, contaminates other evidence and can render a subsequent dismissal or prosecution unsafe. This course covers doing it properly. Delegates work through planning and preparation, which determines most of the outcome, the rights and cautions applicable to different interviewee categories, and a structured interview model that gathers an account before challenging it. Question types are practised, including the leading and compound questions that spoil evidence. Handling denial, silence and distress is covered. Recording, note taking and statement production follow. The course closes on assessing an account against other evidence, and on the limits of what an interview can establish.
