Data Protection and Privacy Law Compliance

Data protection statutes across Southern Africa impose registration, appointment and processing duties that carry criminal as well as administrative penalties, and most organisations subject to them have not completed the basic steps. This course covers becoming compliant. Delegates work through the lawful bases for processing, the conditions and principles the law imposes, and the data subject rights an organisation must be able to honour. Registration and information officer appointment are covered as concrete obligations with deadlines. Cross border transfer, processor contracts and retention follow. Breach identification and notification are addressed. The course closes on building a defensible record of compliance rather than a policy nobody applies.

Course objectives

  • Identify a lawful basis for each processing activity
  • Apply the conditions and principles the statute imposes
  • Honour data subject rights within the statutory time limits
  • Complete registration and information officer appointment obligations
  • Govern cross border transfer, processor contracts and retention
  • Identify a breach and notify within the required period
  • Build a defensible record of compliance rather than an unused policy
