Cultivating Learning Agility in the Workplace

Learning agility is the capacity to perform in a situation you have not encountered before, and it predicts success in new roles better than experience in old ones. This course develops it deliberately. Delegates work on extracting usable lessons from experience rather than simply accumulating it, seeking and using feedback that is uncomfortable, experimenting in low cost ways, and recognising the point at which existing expertise has become an obstacle. The course also covers building the conditions for learning in a team, since agility is suppressed quickly in an environment where mistakes are punished.

  • Extract usable lessons from experience rather than accumulating it
  • Seek and act on feedback that is uncomfortable to hear
  • Design low cost experiments to test an approach
  • Recognise when existing expertise has become an obstacle

  • Build team conditions in which learning is possible
  • Assess learning agility in others when selecting for a new role
