Community Engagement and Social Licence for Projects

Infrastructure, mining and energy projects in Africa are delayed and occasionally stopped by communities whose concerns were handled as a communications exercise. This course treats engagement as project risk management. Delegates work through stakeholder and community mapping, the difference between informing, consulting and genuinely negotiating, and the grievance mechanism that gives people somewhere to go other than the road. Local content, employment and procurement commitments are covered, including the expectations they create. Resettlement and compensation are addressed at an awareness level. The course closes on monitoring the relationship over a project's life and on repairing one that has broken down.
