Benchmarking: Comparing Your Performance

Benchmarking is valuable when the comparison is genuine and misleading when it is not, and most published benchmark comparisons are not. This course covers doing it properly. Delegates work through selecting what to benchmark, finding valid comparators, normalising for the differences that make a raw comparison meaningless, gathering data ethically and legally, and converting a gap into an improvement plan. Attention is given to the competition law limits on information exchange between competitors, and to the common error of adopting another organisation's practice without the conditions that made it work there.

Course objectives

  • Select what to benchmark and why
  • Identify valid comparators rather than convenient ones
  • Normalise data for the differences that distort comparison
  • Gather benchmark data ethically and within competition law
  • Convert a performance gap into a specific improvement plan
  • Assess whether a practice will transfer to your conditions
  • Avoid the common misuses of published benchmark data
