Well Intervention Pressure Control

Live well intervention puts pressure containment in the hands of lubricators, stuffing boxes and wireline valves rather than a full drilling BOP and a column of mud. The barrier philosophy differs, and so do the ways it fails. Delegates begin with barrier envelopes on a producing well, the Christmas tree, master valves and downhole safety valve, then the containment equipment for each intervention type: slickline and electric line rig up with grease injection, coiled tubing strippers and quad BOP stacks, and snubbing units. Rig up pressure testing, leak response, cut and seal decisions, and killing the well by bullheading, lubricate and bleed or reverse circulation are covered. Hydrates, H2S and trapped pressure are treated as specific hazards. Delegates leave able to plan pressure containment for intervention on a live well.

5 day course

Course objectives

  • Define primary and secondary barrier envelopes on a live well
  • Describe pressure control equipment for slickline, electric line, coiled tubing and snubbing
  • Plan rig up and pressure testing of a lubricator system
  • Respond to leaks at the stuffing box, grease head and stripper
  • Decide when to close, shear and seal on an intervention BOP
  • Select a kill method such as bullheading or lubricate and bleed
  • Recognise hydrate, H2S and trapped pressure hazards during intervention
  • Prepare an intervention pressure control plan

Who should attend

  • Wireline and slickline supervisors and operators
  • Coiled tubing and snubbing supervisors
  • Well intervention and well services engineers
  • Production supervisors who hand over wells for intervention
  • Company representatives overseeing well services
