Switchgear Life Assessment and Condition Testing

Deciding whether a switchboard has another decade in it, or needs replacing now, is a capital decision usually made on age because nobody has assembled the condition evidence. This course covers assembling it. Delegates work through the degradation mechanisms that actually end switchgear life, the diagnostic tests that reveal each, and the interpretation of results across a population rather than a single panel. Partial discharge measurement, thermographic survey and mechanism timing are covered in depth. The course then moves to the decision itself: building a condition based ranking across a fleet, estimating remaining life with its uncertainty stated, and presenting a replacement case that a capital committee will fund.

Course objectives

  • Identify the degradation mechanisms that actually end switchgear life
  • Select diagnostic tests that reveal each mechanism
  • Measure and interpret partial discharge in service
  • Apply thermographic survey and mechanism timing to condition assessment
  • Interpret results across a population rather than a single unit
  • Estimate remaining life and state the uncertainty honestly
  • Build a replacement case a capital committee will fund

Who should attend

  • Asset managers and asset strategy engineers
  • Electrical engineers in utilities and heavy industry
  • Condition monitoring and testing specialists
  • Maintenance managers
  • Capital planning staff in networks and plants
