Emerging TechnologiesSmart Agriculture and Precision Farming
Precision agriculture promises to apply water, fertiliser and chemicals only where they are needed, and it delivers that on farms with the data, connectivity and equipment to act on a recommendation, which is a real constraint across much of Africa. This course covers what works. Delegates work through soil and yield mapping, remote sensing and the indices used to assess crop condition, and variable rate application where the equipment permits it. Sensing for irrigation scheduling is covered, since water is usually the binding constraint. Livestock monitoring and traceability follow. Data platforms, connectivity and the practical realities of a farm without reliable network are addressed. The course closes on evaluating a technology investment against the farm's actual limiting factor.
Course objectives
- Build soil and yield maps and interpret their variability
- Apply remote sensing and vegetation indices to crop condition
- Implement variable rate application within equipment limits
- Schedule irrigation using soil and weather sensing
- Apply monitoring and traceability to livestock operations
- Work with data platforms under unreliable connectivity
- Evaluate an investment against the farm's actual limiting factor
Who should attend
