Sewer Networks and Pumping Station Management

Most sewer failures are visible on the street rather than in a control room, and by the time they are reported the utility is dealing with a public health incident and a reputational one at the same time. This course works on prevention. Delegates work through network hydraulics and why a sewer designed for gravity flow silts, blocks and surcharges in practice. Blockage causes are addressed specifically, including fat, rag and the illegal connection that overloads a catchment. Inspection methods follow, covering manhole survey, closed circuit television survey and coding what the footage shows. Cleaning and rehabilitation options are covered, including the choice between replacement and lining. Pumping stations are addressed in operational detail: wet well management, pump duty and standby, rising main issues and the alarm that must reach somebody. Odour and corrosion in sewers follow. The course closes on overflow management, on incident response and on maintaining an asset record that supports planning.
