Scaffolding Erection, Inspection and Safety

Scaffolds collapse and people fall from them for reasons that are visible during an inspection, which makes competent inspection the control that matters most. This course covers erecting and inspecting them. Delegates work through scaffold types and their application, foundations and bearing capacity, and the components and their correct assembly including ties, bracing and platform construction. Loading classes and the consequences of exceeding them are covered. Inspection is taught in detail: what to look at, in what order, how often and what to record. Alterations, incomplete scaffolds and tagging follow. The course closes on dismantling, on adverse weather, and on working near live services and edges.

Course objectives

  • Select a scaffold type appropriate to the work
  • Assess foundations and bearing capacity
  • Verify correct assembly including ties, bracing and platforms
  • Apply loading classes and recognise overloading
  • Inspect a scaffold systematically and record the result
  • Control alterations, incomplete scaffolds and tagging
  • Dismantle safely and manage weather and live service hazards

Who should attend

  • Scaffold inspectors and supervisors
  • Erectors and dismantling teams
