Rotating Equipment Alignment and Balancing

Misalignment and imbalance destroy bearings and seals quietly over months, and both are introduced during the maintenance intended to improve reliability. This course covers doing that work correctly. Delegates work through alignment principles and the tolerances that actually matter, soft foot and the base and grouting conditions that make alignment impossible, and alignment technique using dial indicators and laser systems. Thermal growth and running position are covered. Balancing follows: unbalance types, single and two plane balancing, and field balancing technique. Coupling selection and installation are addressed. The course closes on verifying results through vibration and on the record that lets the next person work from a known baseline.

Course objectives

  • Apply alignment principles and realistic tolerances
  • Identify and correct soft foot, base and grouting problems
  • Align using dial indicator and laser methods
  • Account for thermal growth and running position
  • Diagnose unbalance and perform single and two plane balancing
  • Balance in the field and verify by vibration measurement
  • Record results so the next person starts from a known baseline

Who should attend

  • Millwrights, fitters and mechanical technicians
  • Maintenance and reliability engineers
  • Condition monitoring practitioners
  • Maintenance supervisors and planners
  • Commissioning engineers
