Radiation Safety and Radioactive Source Management

Industrial radiation sources sit in level gauges, density meters, radiography equipment and laboratory instruments across mining and process industry, and they are licensed items whose loss or misuse is a regulatory and public safety event. This course covers controlling them. Delegates work through radiation types, units and biological effect, dose limits and the principles of time, distance and shielding, and monitoring including dosimetry and area survey. The licensing and regulatory framework is covered, along with the responsibilities of a radiation protection officer. Source security, inventory, transport and disposal follow, since an orphaned source is the serious scenario. Radiography operations and controlled areas are addressed. The course closes on emergency response and on incident reporting.

Course objectives

  • Explain radiation types, units and biological effect
  • Apply dose limits and the principles of time, distance and shielding
  • Operate dosimetry and area monitoring programmes
  • Meet licensing requirements and the duties of a protection officer
