Project Controls and Performance Monitoring

Project controls exist to tell management the truth about a project early enough to act, and they fail when they report activity instead of progress. This course covers building them. Delegates work through the work breakdown structure and the cost and schedule baselines built on it, progress measurement that cannot be inflated, and earned value as the technique that connects cost to physical progress. Forecasting receives serious attention, since estimate at completion is the number that matters. Change and trend management are covered, along with the reporting that gets read. The course closes on recovering a project whose controls have been telling a comfortable story.

Course objectives

  • Build a work breakdown structure and baseline cost and schedule to it
  • Measure progress by rules that cannot be inflated
  • Apply earned value to connect cost and physical progress
  • Forecast estimate at completion defensibly
  • Manage change and trends before they become variances
  • Produce reporting that management actually acts on
  • Recognise and recover a project whose controls are misleading
