Power BI Report Design and Data Modelling

Reporting tools make it easy to produce a dashboard and difficult to produce a correct one, because the visuals are quick and the data model underneath them is where the answers are actually decided. This course spends its time on the model. Delegates work through connecting and shaping data, including the transformations that belong in the query rather than in the report, and building a star schema with proper relationships instead of one wide table. Measures and calculation logic are covered in depth, including the filter context that makes a total disagree with the sum of its rows. Report and visual design follow. Row level security, refresh, sharing and workspace management are addressed. The course closes on performance and on maintaining a report somebody else built.

Course objectives

  • Connect and shape data, placing transformations in the right layer
  • Build a star schema with correct relationships
  • Write measures and understand filter context
  • Diagnose a total that disagrees with the sum of its rows
  • Design reports and visuals that answer a question
  • Apply row level security and manage refresh and sharing
  • Tune performance and maintain a report built by somebody else

Who should attend
