Operational Technology and Control System Security

Control systems were designed for availability and safety on networks assumed to be isolated, and that assumption ended some years ago while the equipment stayed exactly the same. This course covers securing them without stopping the plant. Delegates work through how control system environments differ from corporate networks, including patching windows measured in years and equipment that cannot be scanned safely, and the reference architecture of zones and conduits used to segment them. Asset discovery in an environment where active scanning is dangerous is covered. Remote and vendor access receives full attention, since it is the commonest entry route. Monitoring, incident response and the safety interaction are addressed. The course closes on procurement requirements for new control equipment.

Course objectives

  • Explain how control system security differs from corporate security
  • Apply a zones and conduits reference architecture
  • Discover assets without active scanning that could disrupt the process
  • Control remote and vendor access to operational systems
  • Patch and manage change within realistic operational constraints
  • Monitor and respond to incidents without compromising safety
  • Write security requirements into control equipment procurement

Who should attend

  • Control, instrumentation and automation engineers
  • IT and information security staff supporting industrial sites
  • Plant and operations managers
  • Maintenance staff with system access
  • Vendors and integrators supplying control equipment
