Water reaches every working place in a mine, and a dewatering system that falls behind floods the lowest and usually the most valuable ground. This course covers keeping ahead of it. Delegates work through hydrogeology and inflow prediction, the pumping systems used in deep and open pit operations, and settler, dam and column design. Pump selection, staging and the energy cost of lifting water are covered, since dewatering is often the largest single power consumer. Water balance and reuse are addressed, along with the storm and flood events that overwhelm a system designed for average conditions. The course closes on discharge quality and regulatory obligations.
