Closure liability accrues from the first day of operation and is routinely underestimated until it is close enough to be unavoidable. This course covers planning for it properly. Delegates work through the closure planning process and progressive rehabilitation during operations, landform design and the establishment of a stable, self sustaining surface, and the management of acid rock drainage and contaminated water, which is the liability most likely to outlive everyone involved. Financial provision and its estimation are covered against regulatory requirements, alongside the social dimension of closure in communities that formed around the mine. The course closes on relinquishment criteria and post closure monitoring.
