Procurement and Materials

Materials Management

Materials management sits between procurement and production and is measured on whether material is available without an unreasonable amount of capital standing still. This course covers the balance. Delegates work through demand forecasting and its error, material requirements planning and the bill of materials that drives it, and the ordering policies that follow including reorder point, periodic review and lot sizing. Safety stock is calculated from service level and variability rather than assumed. Classification directs effort to the items that matter, and the course closes on supplier lead time management and on the coordination between materials, procurement and production that most organisations do informally.

Course objectives

  • Forecast demand and quantify the error in the forecast
  • Apply material requirements planning from a bill of materials
  • Select ordering policies and lot sizing methods
  • Calculate safety stock from service level and variability
  • Classify materials and match control effort to value and criticality
  • Manage supplier lead time and its variability
  • Coordinate materials, procurement and production deliberately

Who should attend
