LPG Storage, Handling and Distribution

Liquefied petroleum gas is stored as a liquid and escapes as a vapour that is heavier than air, collects at ground level and finds an ignition source, which is why the rules around it are prescriptive and unforgiving. This course covers the whole chain. Delegates work through product properties and the behaviour of a release, storage vessel types including bullets and spheres with their separation distances, and pressure relief and vapour handling. Cylinder filling, inspection and requalification are covered in detail. Bulk transfer, road tanker loading and delivery to customer installations follow. Fire protection, water deluge and the escalation scenario are addressed. The course closes on emergency response and on the incidents that have shaped current practice.

Course objectives

  • Explain product properties and the behaviour of a release
  • Describe storage vessel types and their separation requirements
  • Operate pressure relief and vapour handling systems
  • Run cylinder filling, inspection and requalification
  • Carry out bulk transfer and road tanker loading safely
  • Apply fire protection and understand the escalation scenario
  • Respond to an emergency and apply lessons from past incidents

Who should attend

  • LPG depot and filling plant staff
  • Distribution and transport personnel
  • Safety officers on gas installations
