Laboratory Safety and Biosafety Management

From chemical spills to bloodborne pathogen exposure, laboratory incidents are frequently traced back to gaps in risk assessment rather than a lack of rules. This course covers chemical, physical, and biological hazard control, biosafety cabinet use, and the WHO biosafety cabinet classification relevant to clinical and research settings across the continent. Participants leave with a workable incident response plan they can adapt to their own facility.

Course objectives

  • Conduct hazard identification and risk assessment for chemical, physical, and biological agents
  • Classify biosafety levels and select appropriate containment equipment
  • Apply correct personal protective equipment selection and use for different laboratory tasks
  • Manage chemical storage, spill response, and hazardous waste segregation
  • Develop an incident reporting and emergency response procedure for the laboratory

Who should attend

  • Laboratory safety officers and biosafety officers
  • Clinical, research, and industrial laboratory staff
  • Waste handlers and facility support personnel
  • Occupational health and safety coordinators
