Laboratory incidents are traced back to gaps in risk assessment far more often than to a shortage of rules, because the rules were written for the work as it was three years ago and nobody reassessed when the method changed. This course covers assessing the work that is actually done. Delegates work through chemical hazards including incompatible storage, the substances that should never share a shelf, and the fume hood that has not been tested. Biological hazards and containment levels follow, with the agent risk group deciding the controls. Sharps, bloodborne exposure and post exposure procedure are covered. Waste segregation, decontamination and autoclave verification are addressed. Emergency response including spills, fire and first aid is practised. The course closes on training, records and the incident investigation that changes a procedure.
