ISO/IEC 20387 for Biobanking

A biobank exists so that a sample collected today supports research that has not yet been designed, which makes provenance, consent and long term integrity its central problems. This course covers ISO 20387. Delegates work through collection, transport and receipt, the preservation and storage conditions that determine whether a sample remains fit for future use, and the data and traceability that make it findable and interpretable years later. Consent, ethics and the return of results are treated in their own right, alongside the material transfer arrangements governing distribution. The course closes on validation of biobanking processes, quality control, and continuity planning for a collection that cannot be recreated.

Course objectives

  • Apply ISO 20387 requirements across the biobanking process
  • Control collection, transport and receipt of biological material
  • Establish preservation and storage conditions that maintain fitness for use
  • Maintain data, traceability and provenance over long periods
  • Address consent, ethics and the return of results
  • Govern distribution through material transfer arrangements
  • Plan continuity for a collection that cannot be recreated

Who should attend

  • Biobank managers and coordinators
  • Research laboratory and repository staff
  • Quality managers in research institutions
  • Ethics committee and governance staff
  • Assessors and internal auditors
