Inspection, Integrity and Corrosion

Integrity Operating Windows and Inspection Planning

A crude unit can run for a year with every inspection on schedule and still suffer accelerated damage because the desalter outlet chloride crept above a value nobody had written down. API 584 calls such values integrity operating windows. Delegates learn to derive IOWs from the degradation expected in each circuit, classify them as critical, standard or informational limits, and set the response time and action when a parameter drifts. They link limits to process variables such as temperature, wash water rate, pH and hydrogen partial pressure, assign ownership between operations, process engineering and inspection, and build the alarm and notification path. The final sessions show how a recorded exceedance changes the assumed deterioration rate and triggers revised inspection dates and scope. Delegates leave able to write and maintain an IOW register for their own unit.

5 day course

Course objectives

  • Explain the purpose of integrity operating windows as described in API 584
  • Derive operating limits from the degradation expected in each equipment circuit
  • Classify limits as critical, standard or informational
  • Set response times and required actions for each limit
  • Assign ownership of limits between operations, process engineering and inspection
  • Design the alarm, notification and escalation path for an exceedance
  • Evaluate how an exceedance alters deterioration rates and inspection dates
  • Prepare and maintain an IOW register

Who should attend

  • Process engineers in refining and petrochemical units
  • Inspection and corrosion engineers
  • Operations superintendents and shift supervisors
  • Process safety and reliability engineers
  • Control room technologists configuring alarms
