Industrial Utilities: Steam, Compressed Air and Nitrogen

Utilities are treated as a background service until they fail, at which point they stop the plant, and they consume a large share of site energy while nobody owns the number. This course gives them an owner. Delegates work through steam generation, distribution and the trap and condensate systems that decide efficiency, compressed air generation, drying and distribution including leak cost, and nitrogen supply options. Demand side management is covered, since most utility waste is created by users rather than by the plant. Reliability, redundancy and restart after failure are addressed. The course closes on metering, cost allocation and a utilities improvement programme.

Course objectives

  • Operate steam generation and distribution efficiently
  • Manage traps, condensate return and flash steam recovery
  • Operate compressed air generation, drying and distribution
  • Quantify and reduce the cost of air leaks and misuse
  • Select and manage nitrogen supply options
  • Design redundancy and plan restart after a utility failure
  • Meter, allocate cost and run a utilities improvement programme

Who should attend

  • Utilities and plant engineers
  • Energy managers and engineers
  • Maintenance supervisors and technicians
  • Operations managers responsible for site cost
  • Facilities engineers on industrial sites
