Inspection, Integrity and CorrosionIn Service Piping Inspection to API 570
A small bore drain on a hot hydrocarbon line, a dead leg nobody listed, a soil to air interface under a road crossing: these are where operating piping leaks, and API 570 exists so that someone looks there on purpose. Delegates start with the scope of the code and the duties of the owner user and the piping inspector, then divide a unit into circuits and place condition monitoring locations where thinning is most likely. They classify lines by consequence, set thickness and external visual intervals, and treat injection points, mixing points and corrosion under insulation as special concerns. Short and long term corrosion rates, minimum required thickness from the pressure design formula and remaining life are calculated from real readings. The programme ends on records, deferral of an overdue inspection and what a defensible piping file contains.
Course objectives
- Explain the scope of API 570 and the duties it places on the owner user and the piping inspector
- Divide a process unit into piping circuits with clear boundaries
- Select condition monitoring locations and thickness measurement points that capture the worst thinning
- Assign piping classes and set thickness and external visual intervals from them
- Identify injection points, mixing points, dead legs and soil to air interfaces as special inspection concerns
- Calculate short and long term corrosion rates, minimum required thickness and remaining life
- Apply the API 570 rules for deferring an inspection due date
- Specify the records that make a piping inspection history complete and auditable
Who should attend
- Piping inspectors and inspection technicians in refineries and chemical plants
- Inspection engineers responsible for piping circuit programmes
- Corrosion engineers who set thickness monitoring locations
- Maintenance planners scheduling on stream piping inspection
- Operations supervisors who own process piping in their unit
