Hazardous Area Classification in Industrial Plant

Where a flammable atmosphere may be present, the equipment installed must be selected on the basis of a classification somebody produced and documented. This course covers producing and using it. Delegates work through the basis of classification, source of release identification and grading, and zone determination including the extent of a zone and the ventilation that changes it. Equipment protection concepts are covered against the zones they may be installed in, along with temperature classification and gas grouping. Certification, marking and the verification of an installed system follow, and the course closes on inspection regimes and on maintaining classification through modification.

Course objectives

  • Explain the basis of hazardous area classification
  • Identify and grade sources of release
  • Determine zones and their extent, including ventilation effects
  • Select equipment protection concepts appropriate to a zone
  • Apply temperature classification and gas grouping
  • Read certification and equipment marking correctly
  • Verify an installation and maintain classification through modification

Who should attend

  • Electrical and instrumentation engineers
  • Process safety and HSE professionals
  • Maintenance and inspection staff
  • Design and project engineers
  • Contractors working in classified areas
