Greenhouse Gas Accounting and Carbon Footprinting

Emissions numbers now appear in annual reports, lender covenants and customer questionnaires, which makes them subject to assurance and to challenge, and most organisations produce them from data that was never collected for the purpose. This course covers producing defensible ones. Delegates work through organisational and operational boundaries and the consolidation approach chosen, direct and energy indirect emissions and the activity data behind each, and emission factors including their source, vintage and uncertainty. Value chain emissions are covered honestly, since they usually dominate the total and are the least reliable part of it. Base years, recalculation and target setting follow. Assurance readiness is addressed. The course closes on reduction planning and on the claims that cannot be substantiated.

Course objectives

  • Set organisational and operational boundaries and a consolidation approach
  • Collect activity data for direct and energy indirect emissions
  • Select emission factors and document their source and uncertainty
  • Estimate value chain emissions and state their reliability
  • Set a base year, recalculate and establish targets
  • Prepare an inventory for external assurance
  • Plan reductions and avoid claims that cannot be substantiated

Who should attend

  • Environmental and sustainability practitioners
  • Energy managers and engineers
  • Finance and reporting staff preparing disclosures
  • Auditors providing assurance over emissions data
  • Executives accountable for climate commitments
