Drones and Unmanned Aerial Systems for Industry

Aerial survey has become cheap enough to run weekly rather than annually, which changes what mines, farms, utilities and construction sites can measure, and it comes with an aviation regulator who has views about all of it. This course covers both sides. Delegates work through platform and sensor selection for a given task, from photogrammetry through multispectral to thermal and lidar, and flight planning including ground control and accuracy expectations. Data processing into orthomosaics, models and volumes is covered. The regulatory framework is addressed in full: licensing, operator certification, approvals and the restrictions that apply. Safety and airspace risk follow. The course closes on integrating output into engineering and management systems.

Course objectives

  • Select platform and sensors for a given survey task
  • Plan a flight including ground control and accuracy expectations
  • Process imagery into orthomosaics, models and volume calculations
  • Meet licensing, certification and approval requirements
  • Operate within airspace restrictions and manage flight risk
  • Assess data quality and know the limits of the output
  • Integrate results into engineering and management systems

Who should attend

  • Surveyors and geospatial staff
  • Mining, construction and agricultural technical staff
  • Utility and pipeline inspection teams
  • Environmental monitoring personnel
  • Managers evaluating aerial survey capability
