Diamond Recovery and Processing

Diamond recovery is unusual in that the product is a small number of individual objects rather than a mass of metal, which makes liberation without breakage, and security, the two governing concerns. This course covers both. Delegates work through kimberlite and alluvial deposit types, comminution designed to liberate rather than to grind, and dense medium separation as the main concentration step. Recovery follows: X ray and grease based sorting and the final recovery area. Security and the closed circuit that protects it are treated in detail. Diamond valuation, sizing and quality grading are covered at an operational level. The course closes on regulatory obligations including certification of origin.

Course objectives

  • Compare kimberlite and alluvial deposits and their processing
  • Design comminution to liberate stones without breaking them
  • Operate dense medium separation effectively
  • Run X ray and grease based recovery
  • Manage the security regime around the recovery area
  • Size, sort and grade recovered stones at an operational level
  • Meet regulatory and certification of origin obligations

Who should attend

  • Diamond plant metallurgists and engineers
  • Recovery and security personnel
  • Mine managers on diamond operations
  • Government and regulatory officers
  • Valuation and marketing staff
