Customs Duty, Excise and Trade Tax Compliance

Customs is where a tax liability is created by a classification decision made in seconds by somebody who may never see the goods again, and corrected years later with penalties. This course covers getting it right at the border. Delegates work through tariff classification and the interpretative rules that govern it, customs valuation and the additions and deductions permitted, and rules of origin including the preferential arrangements under AfCFTA and SADC. Duty relief regimes, bonded warehousing and temporary importation are covered. Excise duties on the goods that attract them follow. The course closes on post clearance audit, voluntary disclosure and disputing an assessment.
