Control Charting for Testing and Calibration Laboratories

A control chart is how a laboratory knows its measurement process is still the one it validated. This course covers building and using them. Delegates work through chart selection for different quality control materials, establishing control limits from real data rather than from a specification, and the run rules that signal a shift before it becomes a wrong result. Interpretation is the heart of the course: distinguishing a genuine out of control condition from a chart that is too sensitive, and deciding what to do about results already reported when a chart signals. The course closes on integrating charting into a quality control programme and reviewing it periodically.

Course objectives

  • Select the appropriate chart for a given control material and measurement
  • Establish control limits from process data rather than specification
  • Apply run rules to detect a shift before it produces a wrong result
  • Distinguish a genuine signal from an over sensitive chart
  • Decide what to do about results already reported when a chart signals
  • Integrate charting into a wider quality control programme
  • Review and reset limits appropriately over time

Who should attend

  • Laboratory analysts and technicians
  • Quality officers and quality managers
  • Technical signatories
  • Metrologists and calibration staff
  • Internal auditors of laboratories
