Civil Engineering and ConstructionConstruction Risk Management
Cost overruns and late completion on infrastructure projects seldom come from events nobody could foresee. They come from known ground, supply chain, design and interface risks that were listed once at inception and never managed. This course treats risk as a commercial and programme discipline across the life of a project. Delegates identify risks with structured techniques, assess likelihood and impact, and build a live register with owners and responses. Quantitative methods follow, including Monte Carlo simulation of cost and schedule, contingency setting and confidence levels. Allocation of risk through contract form, insurance and bonds is examined from client and contractor viewpoints, along with currency and inflation exposure in African markets. Delegates leave able to run a risk workshop, quantify contingency and report risk exposure to a project board.
Course objectives
- Apply structured techniques to identify project risks and opportunities
- Assess likelihood and consequence and rank risks consistently
- Maintain a risk register with owners, responses and trigger points

- Set contingency at a stated confidence level and manage its drawdown
- Evaluate how contract form, insurance and securities allocate risk
- Assess currency, inflation and supply chain exposure on regional projects
- Report risk exposure and trends to sponsors and project boards
