Confined Space Entry and Rescue

Confined spaces kill entrants and then kill the people who go in after them, which is why rescue arrangements must exist before the first entry rather than be improvised during one. This course covers both entry and rescue. Delegates work through identifying and classifying a confined space, the atmospheric and physical hazards present, and gas testing including instrument use, calibration and the sequence of tests. Ventilation, isolation and cleaning are covered as the controls that make entry possible. Entry procedure, the attendant's role and communication follow. Rescue planning is treated in full, including non entry retrieval and why unplanned rescue attempts account for so many fatalities.

Course objectives

  • Identify and classify a confined space
  • Recognise the atmospheric and physical hazards present
  • Test the atmosphere correctly and maintain the instrument
  • Apply ventilation, isolation and cleaning as entry controls
  • Run an entry including the attendant's role and communication
  • Plan rescue before entry, including non entry retrieval
  • Explain why unplanned rescue attempts cause additional deaths

Who should attend

  • Entrants, attendants and entry supervisors
