Coiled Tubing and Wireline Operations

Much of the work done on a producing well never needs a rig: a gauge run on slickline, a production log on electric line, a nitrogen lift or a cleanout on coiled tubing. Choosing the right conveyance and knowing its limits saves days and avoids stranded tools. Delegates study slickline, braided line and electric line units, toolstrings and jarring, then the main wireline tasks: setting and pulling plugs and valves, gauge runs, caliper and production logging. Coiled tubing follows with unit components, pipe fatigue and string life tracking, force and lockup modelling in horizontal wells, and applications from cleanouts and nitrogen kickoff to acid placement and milling. Tractors and fishing on line close the course. Delegates leave able to select a conveyance and plan a rigless job from rig up to rig down.

5 day course

Course objectives

  • Select between slickline, electric line and coiled tubing for a given task
  • Configure slickline toolstrings and apply jarring techniques
  • Plan setting and retrieval of plugs, gauges and flow control devices
  • Describe electric line logging runs for production and integrity data
  • Track coiled tubing fatigue and decide on string retirement
  • Model coiled tubing forces to predict lockup in deviated wells
  • Plan cleanout, nitrogen lift and fluid placement on coiled tubing
  • Respond to stuck tools and lost wire

Who should attend

  • Wireline and slickline engineers and operators
  • Coiled tubing supervisors and engineers
  • Production and well services engineers
  • Petroleum engineers planning rigless intervention
  • Field supervisors overseeing well service contractors
