Laboratory Excellence and Accreditation

Assessment of Laboratory Competence

Competence is the requirement every laboratory standard rests on and the one most often evidenced by a training record rather than by anything demonstrating ability. This course covers assessing it properly. Delegates work through defining competence for a specific method rather than for a job title, the evidence that actually demonstrates it including witnessed testing, blind samples and result review, and authorisation as a deliberate decision with a scope and a date. Reassessment intervals, competence after a period away from a method, and the handling of an analyst who fails an assessment are covered. The course closes on the records an assessor will expect to see.

Course objectives

  • Define competence for a specific method rather than a job title
  • Select evidence that genuinely demonstrates ability
  • Use witnessed testing, blind samples and result review as assessment
  • Authorise an analyst with a defined scope and date
  • Set reassessment intervals and handle competence after time away
  • Manage an analyst who fails an assessment fairly
  • Keep the competence records an assessor will ask for
