Asbestos and Legacy Hazardous Materials

Asbestos remains in buildings and plant across the region in roofing, lagging, gaskets and boards, and it is harmless until somebody drills, cuts or demolishes it without knowing what it is. This course covers managing that legacy. Delegates work through where asbestos was used and how to recognise likely materials, survey types and the sampling and analysis that confirms presence, and the register and management plan that keeps track of material left in place. The decision to manage in place or remove is covered honestly, since removal creates exposure that leaving it does not. Control measures, enclosure and disposal follow. Other legacy materials including lead paint and polychlorinated biphenyls are addressed. The course closes on contractor control and on health surveillance obligations.
