Emerging TechnologiesAdditive Manufacturing and 3D Printing
Additive manufacturing matters most where supply chains are long and spares are unavailable, which describes a great deal of African industry, and it fails most often when a part is printed that should have been machined. This course covers telling those cases apart. Delegates work through the process families and what each can make in which materials, design for additive manufacture and the geometry that only this route allows, and the material properties that differ from a wrought equivalent. Post processing and finishing are covered. Qualification of a printed part for service receives full attention, since an unqualified structural part is a liability. The course closes on cost modelling, on spares and reverse engineering, and on selecting the right applications.
Course objectives
- Compare the additive process families and their materials
- Design for additive manufacture and exploit geometry it uniquely allows
- Account for material properties that differ from wrought equivalents
- Specify post processing and finishing
- Qualify a printed part for service
- Model cost against machining and conventional supply
- Select applications where additive genuinely wins
Who should attend
- Design and mechanical engineers
- Maintenance and spares engineers
- Manufacturing and production staff
- Procurement staff assessing additive supply
- Technical managers evaluating the technology
